Cable car Argegno - Pigra: opening times and prices

November 21, 2014

The Argegno-Pigra cable car is perhaps little known but it is surely one of the most curious attractions of Lake Como. It connects exactly the two villages of Argegno and Pigra, which are located on the western branch of the lake. Inaugurated in 1971 and reopened in 2011 after a yearlong closure, the cable car takes you from 200 to 850 meters above sea level in only five minutes and it allows you to enjoy a breathtaking view of both the lake and the nearby Alpine foothills of Como.

On the Argegno-Pigra cable car travel two cabins for 12 people each, alternating along a path with significant slopes, from 71% to 95%. This construction has not only a touristic importance but it also represents an irreplaceable connection between the isolated mountain village of Pigra and the shore of the lake, where you can reach Como and Bellagio by motor vessels departing from Argegno.

Pigra is a very small village but rich in history, with the parish church of Santa Margherita, built in the mid-16th century, the Oratory of San Rocco, which is surrounded by houses with elegant stucco decorations dating to the 18th century and Al Cason, the palace housing the headquarters of the local Workers' Association, the one founded in 1877. Pigra is also the ideal starting point for excursions to Mount Galbiga, Alpe di Colonno and Tellero.

The Argegno-Pigra cable car works every day but opening hours vary according to the season. During the summer season, which coincides with the period of school closure, the cable car makes trips from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm and from 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm. During winter, however, the expected opening time is from 6:40 am to 11:30 am and from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm on weekdays, and from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on public holidays. The frequency of service is usually every 30 minutes.

single travel ticket for the Argegno-Pigra cable car costs 2.90 €, while the return ticket costs 3.90 €. Reduced tickets for kids under 12 are also available, as well as season tickets and travel cards. Upon payment of an additional fee, you can also carry bicycles and pets.
