Cetara in Amalfi Coast, a town with small beaches and culinary delights

January 24, 2014

Cetara is a small and picturesque fishing village on the Amalfi Coast, nestled in a valley at the foot of Mount Falerio. The geographical position of the town, decentralized rather than the most popular resorts in the area, made it immune to mass tourism until now. The economy of the village is still focused mainly on fishing, especially tuna and anchovies. A culinary delicacy to be savored in Cetara is the "colatura" of anchovies, a special sauce made from fermented fish, which can be served combined with a plate of spaghetti.

The small Cetara offers to the attention of the tourists two very nice beaches. The first, bounded by a promenade flanked by typical houses with arches, the old tower with a square base and the fishing boats, is located right in front of the town and is easily accessible by car via the junction that leads down to the Marina. The exposure of the beach is to the south-east but it is still illuminated by the sun for most of the day. The sea is crystal clear, of course.

The other beach is beside the harbor of Cetara and has formed in recent times. It consists of a pleasant beach of sand and small pebbles, about 70 meters long, overlooking the bay of Collata. The water is generally clean and the sun heats it until late afternoon. The beach of the harbor is easily accessible by car.

Beyond the typical seaside attractions, Cetara can count on other places of interest such as the aforementioned Viceroy Tower of the sixteenth century, built by the Angevins and subsequently enhanced by the Aragonese to defend the city against the continuous attacks of the pirates. The Church and Convent of St. Francis of the seventeenth century, the Church of St. Peter the Apostle, built in the ninth century at the time of the expulsion of the Saracens by the Normans, and finally the Church of Our Lady of Constantinople worth a visit, too.

Cetara is also a popular destination for windsurfing fans thanks to the favorable environmental conditions that are usually found in this area.
