Italy and its love for GMO-free products

April 11, 2016

Italy loves food. Italy especially loves Italian food, because it’s part of its culture, tradition, wellbeing.

The worldwide famous Mediterranean Diet, even today a modern nutritional recommendation, is - in itself - based on a food pyramid that puts at its center the wellbeing of the individual: in fact, the diet includes a high consumption of olive oil, legumes, unrefined cereals, vegetables and fruits, a quite moderate consumption of fish, cheese, yogurt, milk and a low consumption of meat.

The Mediterranean Diet is so accredited that, in 2013, UNESCO added it to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of Italy (promoter), Morocco, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, and Croatia.

Italians also love their products to be fresh and healthy. Therefore, it shouldn’t be surprising that the sales of GMO-free products in Italy have seen double digit growth in 2015, making it the most dynamic segment of the otherwise stagnant food retail sector. As a consequence of a new sensitivity towards celiac consumers, sales of gluten-free products are also currently up 50%. And what about organic food? Its sale, in Italy, has increased of 20% in the last year.

Coldiretti, the Italian Farmers Association, explains that these data are the result of consumers’ increased attention to health, fitness and wellness, that pushes them to spend more money for fresh, healthier and more natural food: 65% of the Italians has stated that they would choose it if GMO-free guaranteed, while another 62% would pay even more for organic products.

Today, one out of three Italians buys only organic or natural food, according to the European Supermarket Magazine.

Eating in the most healthy way is, all in all, not so hard in Italy, where the largest number of organic farms is located: almost 50,000 are currently operative throughout the whole country.
