Things to do and see in one day on the Amalfi Coast

January 10, 2014

The Amalfi Coast is so rich in scenic and cultural attractions than just a one day visit... it is almost a crime. A thorough tour of the beautiful towns of the area would require at least a week, but if the time is kept to a minimum, there are a few routes, which allow you to visit in a few hours the many places of interest in the Amalfi Coast by car, boat or bus.

The classic route to admire the Amalfi Coast in a single day provides for the departure by car from the Historic Centre of Naples: in an hour and a half of travel, after passing through the magnificent Gulf of Sorrento, you can reach Positano that can be visited in about an hour. From Positano you can get to Amalfi in just thirty minutes. After a thorough examination to the streets of what was once one of the four Maritime Republics, there is some time to stop for lunch or take a dip, if the weather allows it, before resuming the journey towards Ravello, just 15 minutes by car. Sixty minutes of walk in the picturesque alleys of Ravello are more than enough before returning to the starting point: Naples is located only an hour and twenty minutes away from there.

For those who do not have their own car and prefer not to take advantage of the rental cars with driver, public transportation is a viable alternative, albeit with some limitations compared to trips by car. Buses headed for Amalfi leave from Varco Immacolatella, inside the port of Naples. The journey from Naples to Amalfi takes about two hours or even longer in case of (frequent) traffic. However, there are a couple of options to reach Positano: the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento, from where you can take the bus towards this beautiful little town, or the hydrofoil.

There is a little difference if the starting point is not Naples, but the closest Salerno. In this case, the ideal is a boat trip with a view of the most charming villages of the Amalfi Coast: in this order, Erchie, Minori, Atrani, Conca dei Marini, Praiano and Furore. Alternatively, the bus from Salerno provides a tour of the most famous cities, as Cetara, Maiori, Amalfi and Positano. All in one day.
