Ferrari 488 Spider: the most beautiful car in ItalyMay 9, 2016
The Ferrari 488 Spider is, currently, considered Italy's most beautiful car. According to critics, this piece of art really captures the essence and the epitome of beauty just like Michelangelo's David did, at its time. And just like the statue is still recognized as a symbol of heroism, civil liberties and male anatomy, the Ferrari 488 Spider is the symbol of perfection in lines and proportion, the flawless mixture of grace and power.
The Ferrari 488 Spider is currently Italy's greatest looking export on four wheels: born in the rural country of Maranello, Emilia Romagna region, between Modena and Bologna, it has now spread throughout the whole world. The Prancing Horse doesn't miss a beat and it doesn't matter how many decades have passed since the first productions by Enzo Ferrari: his inspiration is still there, very present, and always as peculiar as it used to be back in the 1900.
The geographical area may have had its impact on the Ferrari 488 Spider's all-around beauty – since it stands right in the middle on what is called, in Italy, the Terra di Motori (Land of Motors), hosting Maserati, Ducati, Lamborghini and Pagani, other than Ferrari.
The gorgeous Spider made its debut in Frankfurt, last September, final result of the open-top V8 supercar saga.
The Ferrari 488 Spider is the most performance-oriented and capable Spider ever built by the company: 3.9-litre, twin-turbocharged V8, 661 horses and a huge 760 Nm (560 lb-ft) torque figure at 3000 rpm.
In terms of acceleration, the car goes from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3,0 seconds, and from 0 to 200 km/h in about 8.7 seconds. Impressive. A throttle response which essentially eliminates that turbo lag that is typical to this kind of engine.
The spaceframe chassis that creates that beauty that is Ferrari 488 Spider is made out of 11 different 6000 series aluminum alloy and was produced at the Scaglietti centre of excellence.
Its Retractable Hard Top, which had debuted on the 458 Spider, not only provides a better protection from the outside world – necessary, when you're driving such a monster of performance – but also allows the driver to easily maneuver the whole rig, which can be raised and lowered even on the go, and in less than 15 seconds.
Ferrari cars are always Italian, and yet the Ferrari 488 Spider is even more Italian, since it was completely designed in-house, at Ferrari's own Styling Center. The result? Astonishing, capable of transforming something already beautiful in an even more aggressive and planted object, where aerodynamics mixes ergonomics.
