What a surprise! Trentodoc, and not Prosecco, is the best sparkling wine in Italy

May 15, 2017

No more Prosecco: it’s time for the Trentodoc, recently elected by Forbes as the best sparkling wine brand in Italy.

These wines comes from the high peaks and steep valleys of the Trentino region in the Dolomites, part of the Italian Alps. According to Forbes, what makes Trentodoc especially peculiar are the dramatic day/night temperature fluctuations of the region, resulting in low yields of mineral-infused wines.

Trentodoc is therefore the result of a slow, difficult and expensive process called Metodo Classico (Classic Method). The wine is relatively new, since the modern industry was only founded in the first decade of the 20th century by Giulio Ferrari. After winning the gold medal at the International World’s Fair in Milan in 1906 with its Chardonnay, the company became the dominant player in the appellation and kept producing some of the best wines in Italy.

The main grapes used are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but the “collection” also includes Pinot Meunier and Pinot Blanco.

Today, the Trentino region is the second largest producer of Italian Metodo Classico wine and its sales keep on growing.

Trentodoc’s major wines are:

  • Altemasi 2010: a 100% Chardonnay with a rich and meaty texture and a hugely appealing elegance thanks to its jasmine, almonds and brioche flavors.
  • Ferrari Perlé: a sweet 100% Chardonnay with a perfect balance in terms of acidity. A truly complex, wonderful and perfectly matured Chardonnay.
  • Rotari Rosé 2013: a 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay that tastes big and unrefined at first, and then mellows as beguilingly tasty as its earthy Pinot elements emerge.
  • Maso Martis DosaggioZero Riserva 2011: a 70% Pinot Nero and 30% Chardonnay characterized by a bone dry flavor, result of: pure fruit and impeccable winemaking.
  • Borgo dei Posseri T Tananai: a pale wine with a flavor of ethereal lightness where peaches and ribbons of slatey minerality emerge.
