However, there are territories within this Italian region that truly epitomize natural beauty in its purest sense, such as Maremma (you can read our article about it here) or Argentario.

Located in the southernmost part of Tuscany, the Argentario peninsula is a stunning and unspoiled destination, perfect for those who want to get away from the crowds and explore the region's natural beauty in a brand-new way. The whole area is surrounded by crystal clear waters and natural landscapes so fascinating as to leave you breathless.

Argentario’s rugged coastline is lapped by a crystal-clear sea

One of the main attractions of the Argentario lies in the charm of its unspoiled and wild nature. This territory is famous for its rugged coastline and sublime cliffs dotted with beautiful beaches, quaint old villages and hidden coves. The sea is a vibrant turquoise color and is home to prosperous marine life, made of schools of fish, dolphins and even the occasional whale.

Inland, the Argentario is a symphony of rolling hills covered with olive groves and vineyards. The green heights offer panoramic views of the sea and are excellent places for pleasant hikes or bike rides.

The area is also home to several important protected nature reserves, such as the Maremma Natural Park, where you can spot wild boars, deer and other wild species.

The Argentario area has a rich history that dates back to ancient times: its strategic position on the Tyrrhenian Sea has made the peninsula an important center for commerce and industry. Over the centuries, it has been inhabited by the Etruscans, Romans and other ancient civilizations, of which it is still possible to see archaeological finds and works throughout the region.

In this sense, one of the most suggestive works is the Spanish Fortress, built by the Spaniards in the 16th century to defend themselves against attacks by the Ottoman Empire. The fort is now a museum where you can explore local history (as well as the fascinating ramparts!).

The Argentario is also home to beautiful towns and villages, such as Porto Ercole, Porto Santo Stefano and Orbetello. Each offers a privileged glimpse into the local way of life and proves to be perfect for sampling the delicious traditional Tuscan cuisine.

What to do in the Argentario area: live the outdoors like never before!

The Argentario peninsula is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. It offers a chance to experience various activities, including swimming, snorkeling, diving, sailing, and kayaking. Several hiking and biking trails wind through the hills and will enchant you with their stunning sea views.

One of the most popular activities in the Argentario area is boating. The area is studded with charming fishing villages and marinas, and there are plenty of opportunities to rent a boat and explore the coastline. You can also take a boat tour to the nearby islands of Giglio and Giannutri, which offer stunning beaches and breathtaking natural beauty.

If you want to spend your time more peacefully, there are numerous beaches where you can sunbathe and relax. Here are our favorites (considered among the most beautiful in Italy!):

• Cala Grande is a beautiful beach on the western coast of the Argentario. It is famous for its rocky reefs and crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
• Feniglia is a long sandy beach stretching kilometers along the Argentario coast. Surrounded by beautiful pine forests and characterized by breathtaking sea views, it is ideal for swimming and windsurfing and kite surfing.
• Cala Piccola is a spectacular beach on the southern coast of the Argentario, and among the most popular in Tuscany for swimming, sunbathing and snorkeling.

Finally, don't forget to explore the mainland! Monte Argentario, for example, is located right in the center of the peninsula and offers truly unique views over the surrounding landscape. It is a perfect destination for hiking, thanks to the many available paths. In addition, it is not far from the Macchiatonda Nature Reserve, a splendid park on the west coast of the Argentario.
