The city of Palermo, in Sicily, is the capital of the Region and is well known for its history, culture, architecture and gastronomy. In its over 2,700 years of existence, Palermo and its region have given birth to several notable figures, such as Empedocles, Archimedes, Pope Leo II, Theocritus, the Count of Cagliostro, authors Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, Giovanni Verga, Luigi Pirandello, Leonardo Sciascia and Andrea Camilleri, poet and Nobel laureate Salvatore Quasimodo, actor Enrico Lo Verso, Oscar-nominated Sol Polito, famous anti-mafia judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, painters Renato Guttuso and Giorgio De Chirico, composers Vincenzo Bellini and Alessandro Scarlatti, singer-songwriter Frank Sinatra, director Frank Capra, actors Al Pacino and Robert De Niro - just to pick a few names from the long list.

Palermo was founded in 734 BC by the Phoenicians, as Ziz (“flower”) for its immense beauty. Then it became a possession of Carthage and, subsequently, part of the Roman Republic. Eventually, Palermo became part of the Byzantine Empire for over a thousand years. All this suggestions and different cultures made the city what it is today: a splendid gem of art and architecture, rich in history and heritages.

Its territory is loved by tourists worldwide for its seducing Mediterranean weather, renowned gastronomy, its Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque churches, palaces and buildings, nightlife and music and - of course - beautiful sea and beaches: the basin Palermo lies in was named The Golden Basin by the Arabs.
