Como is in close proximity of the famous Lake Como and the Alps - two natural beauties that make the city extremely appreciated by tourists from all over the world. Como is also full of numerous works of art, museums, churches, parks and palaces, theatres and gardens and is the fourth most visited city in Lombardy after Milan, Bergamo and Brescia.

From a historical point of view, Como and its surroundings have been inhabited since at least the Bronze Age, but were also subject to Romans and it current location was set by order of Julius Caesar.
Como is situated at the southern tip of the south-west arm of Lake Como and only 40 kilometers away from Milan. It borders Switzerland and the its major nearby cities include Varese, Lugano and Lecco.
Among the many works of art in Como, it's worth mentioning the Cathedral, built in 1457 in Gothic style, the Romanesque Basilica of Sant'Abbondio, consecrated in 1095, the ancient town hall, known as the Broletto, Villa Olmo, built from 1797 in neoclassicist style by the Odescalchi family and which housed, among the others, Napoleon, Ugo Foscolo, Prince Metternich, Archduke Franz Ferdinand I, Giuseppe Garibaldi; and Castello Baradello, a small medieval castle overlooking the town and which is all that remains of the fortress constructed by Barbarossa in 1158.
The city and its surroundings provide many and different sport activities, including pedal-boating, walking and seaplane rentals.
