Only Italian hazelnuts for the famous Nutella

May 14, 2018

The brand Ferrero only wants Italian hazelnuts to produce its worldwide famous Nutella. Being hazelnuts one of Nutella’s main ingredients, the brand’s decision shows how much the concept of excellence should be considered important.

In order to reach its goal, the Italian company just recently launched the so-called “Progetto Nocciola Italia”, an ambitious plan that calls for the development, by 2025, of 20,000 hectares of new hazelnuts plantations – about 30% more than the current surface.

Today, for its Nutella, Ferrero uses hazelnuts coming from Italy, but also from foreign countries such as Turkey, Chile, South Africa. With the new project, promoted by the company’s internal division Ferrero Hazelnut Company, Ferrero wants to develop a 100% Italian production through the creation of a real territorial development system. The project also aims to support agricultural entrepreneurs.

Italy is already one of the world’s main players when it comes to hazelnuts: today, over 70,000 hectares of land are dedicated to the cultivation of hazelnuts, with an average production of fruits in shell of about 110,000 tons per year.
