Palio di Siena 2013: the contrade who will compete on July 2
June 25, 2013This year it's all ready for the Palio di Siena 2013, the historic horse race of medieval origin that sees the contrade of the city of Siena in Tuscany compete against each other. As every year, the "Carriera", as it is traditionally called the race, will be held twice: on July 2 for the Palio of July in honor of the Madonna of Provenzano, and on August 16 for the Palio of Mid-August in honor of the Feast of the Assumption.
The ten contrade of the city of Siena, who will compete on July 2, 2013 in Piazza del Campo have already been selected. During each Palio only ten of the seventeen contrade partecipate, seven of which are those who have not attended the same race the previous year. The other three are raffled on the last Sunday of May preceding the race.
The contrade that have been drawn this year are Leocorno (Unicorn), Onda (Wave) and the Nicchio (Seashell). The Pantera (Panther) is the only contrada that will run without the direct rival, while the other will have all the corresponding enemy: the Valdimontone (Valley of the Ram), the previous winner, will run against the Nicchio; the Torre (Tower), who alredy had the Oca (Goose), attended the extraction of the Onda, while the Leocorno went on to reach the Civetta (Little Owl). Finally, the Istrice (Crested Porcupine) and the Lupa (She-Wolf) already knew that they would face on the layer of tuff.
To find out which contrada will win the next Palio di Siena, we cannot do anything but wait for July 2, 2013.
